| Why Tom
Chasteen for Mayor... |
 |
In
1990 when Athens merged with Clarke county, to form
ACC, Tom Chasteen determined to be a part of establishing
this new, infant government. His work in the city planning
commission gave him the knowledge and passion to be
involved with how this community should grow.
All of the laws and ordinances of the two communities,
and all of the government, service and recreation departments,
water and sewer services had to come together. New departments
and management staffs had to be created with new definitions
of responsibility. Tom ran for Council post 9, a super-district
representing one-half of ACC, and was elected. His leadership
in being able to bring consensus to opposing opinions
advanced progress. In his second term he served as chairman
of the Human and Economics Development commission. |
|
| Tom
has been reelected to his District 9 post three tmes.
His area represented the disfavored neighborhoods, poor
and rural, and he stepped up to ensure they received
promised services like recreation, police and fire stations,
and water lines. New industry was attracted and provided
new jobs and income to support the growing population
and the ever increasing needs that had to be funded. |
|
| Today, in
his fourth ACC term, Tom’s vision for downtown Athens
is being realized. The Classic Center is a major location for
meetings, conferences, and shows. Visitors spend money downtown,
offsetting some of the loss of revenue to the Occone county
Epps Bridge commercial area. He works to advance the attractive
quality of life in Athens, like pushing for bicycle traffic
lanes on Lumpkin St. and new recreational areas. What we provide
for our community in quality of life, Tom, the businessman,
recognizes the need to source revenue to pay for these services–
without raising taxes. |
|
Tom Chasteen characterizes himself
as different from others in local government in that he seeks out
the divergent opinions on an issue. He listens to the arguments
for and against a decision from everyone and then comes to a conclusion
that will benefit the most people fairly. With over 15 years of
ACC government experience and accomplishment, no one is better qualified
to be the next mayor of Athens. Tom Chasteen is experienced at delivering
results. |
